Overview

Ever wonder why users don't behave how you expect? Ever done usability testing or found usability issues but didn't know how to fix them?

This course will provide an insight into human characteristics and online behaviour based on latest research and hundreds of usability tests with users, including video footage of usability test sessions. We will also cover the theory and principles of interaction design.

Module 1: Introduction to interaction design

  • Types of design - interaction, interface and information design
  • Defining the interaction experience
  • Levels of interaction

Module 2: Interaction design principles

Learn about interaction design principles, guidelines and laws such as:

  • Visibility of system status

Presentation design principles such as:

  • Aesthetic-Usability effect
  • Visual balance

  • Typography and Legibility
  • Visual hierarchy - controlling user focus

Module 3: Online user behaviour

  • Splash and Flash
  • Navigation behaviours - how users find stuff
  • Fly outs and cascading menus
  • Three clicks rule - the reality
  • Navigation behaviour and menu design
  • Cross linking
  • Banner and header blindness
  • How users read content
  • Literacy and readability
  • Launching new windows

Module 4: Human cognition and design

  • Vision - how people see websites
  • Sensory storage and perception
  • Memory, attention and information processing
  • Design implications: Cognitive load, interference effects, Hick's law and visual groupings

Module 5: User considerations in design

  • Users' knowledge and experience
  • Users' psychological and emotive needs
  • Seniors - Physical and psychological characteristics that affect design
  • Designing for users with disabilities
