Overview

This course explores a range of tools, methods and interaction design principles relevant to websites, web applications, forms, intranets and mobile web.

You will gain an insight into human characteristics and online behaviour based on the latest research and hundreds of usability tests with users, including video footage of usability test sessions. You will also learn the theory and principles of interaction design relevant to a range of interfaces as well as methods you can use to involve users and gain stakeholder buy-in.

We will provide you with tools, methods and interface design considerations you need to take into account when designing mobile web interfaces.

Costs and registration

The cost for this 2 day course is $1495 plus GST = $1644.50 - includes lunch, refreshments and all course materials including examples and templates that you can use in your own organisation.

  • Different navigation models – what do users prefer
  • Cross linking
  • Banner and header blindness
  • How users read content and how to design usable content
  • Literacy and readability

Module 3: Interface and presentation design principles

Learn about interaction design principles, guidelines and laws such as:

  • Fitts' law
  • Aesthetic-Usability effect
  • Visual balance and Colour
  • Typography and Legibility
  • Visual hierarchy, Page layout and visual flow

Module 4: Application structure and flow

Module 6: Forms and application design fundamentals

  • Designing usable forms
  • Sorting, filtering and faceted search
  • Data input – editing and manipulating
  • Choosing effective controls and common mistakes and mis-uses

Module 7: AJAX and RIAs

  • Pitfalls and common usability issues that users experience with rich and dynamic interfaces.
  • AJAX - dynamic display and interaction

Module 8: Mobile web

  • Design considerations and guidelines for designing usable mobile web interfaces

Methods and interactive exercises covered throughout the two days will include:

  • Ethnographic study: observing users and task analysis
  • Conducting expert usability reviews of a range of different interfaces
  • Collaborative design techniques: How to involve stakeholders in the design process
  • Paper prototyping websites, web applications and mobile web
